Art + Environment

This in from Geoff Manaugh of BLDGBLOG:

To make a long story short, my wife and I will be living in New York City this fall where we will be coordinating an independent design studio, called "Landscapes of Quarantine," meeting to explore the spatial implications of quarantine. Best of all, the resulting projects will be displayed in a public exhibition at Storefront for Art and Architecture, to be held in early 2010.

We have already confirmed a fantastic group of ten people, whose backgrounds include architecture, sound design, urban gaming, comic books, film, photography, art, landscape, and food – but we are now throwing things open for public applications.

We're looking for a few more participants, at any stage in their career, who are excited by the studio brief (linked below), and who already have the technical skills necessary to produce a final, exhibition-quality work. These final design projects could range from tongue-in-cheek public health posters to plans for plug-in biosecurity rooms in the American suburbs, from maps of quarantine stations around the world to an oral history of the quarantined, from a photo series of airport quarantine facilities to short science fiction films. Swine flu, agricultural regulations, national security, the constitutional implications of involuntary medical isolation – these are all part of any sustained conversation about quarantine.

They are also all fertile terrain for design.

The studio will run from October 6 to December 5, 2009, and it will meet Tuesday evenings in Manhattan. Guest lecturers, discussions, readings, screenings, and even a field trip or two are all part of the plan, as are interim and final crits with a distinguished group of visitors.

See the brief for more info, and please feel free to forward this to anyone who you think might be interested. We'd hugely appreciate your help in spreading the word!

Thanks – and, if you're in NYC, hopefully I will see you around this fall.

Best, Geoff
